Our Teachers

Erin McCarroll
Founding Teacher Leader
Erin’s career as a Montessori educator began in 2012. After 2 years assisting in a Lower Elementary classroom, she led an Early Childhood classroom for eight years. Erin holds an Early Childhood credential from the American Montessori Society and a B.A. in Psychology.
Erin’s practice of Montessori is rooted in her own experiences as a learner. She traces her path to Hollyhock through a long line of generous teachers and mentors.
She still remembers the thrilling mix of joy and agency she felt when her third-grade teacher began excusing her from class at 1:30 each afternoon, instead sending her to the library armed with a list of research questions. Long before the days of Google (or even the internet) this experience planted the seeds of a lifelong interest in self-directed and experiential learning. Erin is committed to nurturing this agency and joy in all learners.

Esmeralda Salgado
Assistant Teacher
Esmeralda holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish. Growing up in a small town helped shape her values and perspective; she is bilingual, family-oriented, and deeply appreciative of close-knit, supportive communities.
Before joining Hollyhock, Esmeralda worked in a daycare setting, where she developed a strong passion for early childhood education. Her experience there allowed her to build meaningful connections with young children and their families, while gaining hands-on experience in nurturing emotional, social, and cognitive development.
Esmeralda began at Hollyhock as a part-time assistant. Now, as a full-time assistant teacher, she looks forward to spending more time in the classroom, guiding and encouraging students each day with patience, empathy, and joy.

The real preparation for education is the study of one’s self. The training of the teacher who is to help life is something far more than the learning of ideas. It includes the training of character; it is a preparation of the spirit.
